Stannous sulphate can be prepared by reacting tin metal (Sn) with dilute sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄):
Sn (s) + H2SO4→SnSO4+H2↑\text{Sn (s) + H}_2\text{SO}_4 \rightarrow \text{SnSO}_4 + \text{H}_2 \uparrowSn (s) + H2​SO4​→SnSO4​+H2​↑
This reaction releases hydrogen gas.

Electroplating: Used in some tin-plating baths.

Chemical analysis: Acts as a reducing agent.

Pigment production: In certain specialty pigment manufacturing.

Intermediate: Used in the synthesis of other tin(II) compounds.
